The Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA), second Programme was successfully conducted on 17 and 18 September 2026 at the Field Crop Research and Development Institute (FCRDI), Mahailluppallama, with the participation of 21 Agriculture Instructors (AIs) from the Department of Agriculture.
The two-day programme was organized to strengthen the knowledge and practical capacity of Agriculture Officers on Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA), with particular emphasis on climate change adaptation practices, CSA technologies, and the integration of CSA interventions into activities supported under the Integrated Rurban Development and Climate Resilience Project (IRDCRP).

The first day commenced with a session conducted by Mr. Amith Abeysinghe, who introduced the participants to the fundamental concepts of Climate Smart Agriculture and highlighted the importance of adopting appropriate and innovative CSA adaptation practices in response to emerging climate-related challenges.
This was followed by a technical session conducted by Dr. (Mrs.) Swarna Herath, which focused on the technical aspects of CSA and relevant climate-smart agricultural technologies. The session provided participants with practical knowledge on the application of appropriate technologies and practices to improve agricultural productivity while strengthening resilience to climate variability and reducing potential environmental impacts.

The second day focused on linking CSA knowledge and technologies with the implementation of the IRDCRP. Dr. Lakmal Kaluarachchi conducted a session on the relevant components of the project and explained how CSA interventions can be incorporated into IRDCRP-supported activities.
The session helped participants understand the practical linkages between CSA approaches and the project's interventions, particularly in promoting climate-resilient agricultural production, improved resource management, productivity enhancement, and sustainable agricultural practices.
A practical session on proposal writing and the integration of CSA activities into IRDCRP project proposals was subsequently conducted by Mr. Dhananjaya Siriwardena. Participants were guided on how CSA considerations can be incorporated into project proposals in a practical and systematic manner, ensuring that proposed interventions respond to climate-related risks while contributing to project objectives.
Strengthening Capacity for Climate-Resilient Agriculture
The two-day programme provided an important platform for Agriculture Officers to enhance their understanding of Climate Smart Agriculture and its practical application within development interventions. Through a combination of technical presentations, knowledge sharing, and practical exercises, participants gained a better understanding of CSA concepts, adaptation practices, technologies, project interventions, and proposal development.
The programme is expected to strengthen the capacity of field-level Agriculture Officers to support the effective planning and implementation of CSA interventions under IRDCRP and contribute to the project's broader objective of promoting productive, sustainable, and climate-resilient agri-food systems.
The successful completion of the CSA, second Programme, represents another important step towards strengthening institutional capacity and mainstreaming climate-smart approaches across IRDCRP interventions.
